This small, picturesque harbor town, nestled at the foot of the Taurus Mountains, retains its charm and beauty, as it has done since ancient Lycian times. The friendliness and simplicity of the local people and the unspoilt nature of this pretty setting make Kas an attractive centre as much today as 3000 years ago. Kas is one of the gems of Turkey's spectacular "Turquoise Coast." Just four hours west of Antalya, the evocative view unfolds as the road descends to sea level. Many a tourist has abandoned his original itinerary to an impromptu several days exploring the bays, islands and mountains surrounding the town. It is a seductive blend of village life, rural enterprise, fishing and a brisk tourist trade. Kas, in Turkish, literally, means "eye brow." Kas has become an important touristic centre. Here, it is possible to enjoy history, sea and sun in an unspoilt, secluded setting.
Dating from the sixth century B.C., an impressive, open air theatre from the Hellenistic period overlooks the sea. It has 26 tiers of seats, an agora and the remains of underground domed chambers, once used as silos. There are also a few remains of the defence walls that sorrounded the city of Antiphellos in various locations around the town. The Lycian Rock Tombs are an important feature of Kas. The Monument Tomb, featuring four lions heads, is situated at the top of the main shopping street. The Rock Tombs, high above the town, are lit up during the summer months. They can be reached on foot and bear Lycian inscriptions. Another tomb, resembling a house, can be reached from the northwest side of the town in the direction of the 'new' mosque. It features a grave, dating from the 4th century B.C., 3.70 meters high with a relief representing 24 dancing girls.
SIGHTSEEING AROUND KAS
KALKAN is 26 kilometres west of Kas. En route, don't miss the spectacular KAPUTAŞ BEACH. Also, the BLUE CAVE, best seen from the sea. PATARA is the birth place of St. Nicholas. 43 kilometres west of Kas. It has impressive ruins and attracts archaelogists from many places. The 18 kms streteh of sandy beach is one of the finestin Turkey. Xanthos, 45 kms from Kaş, was the capital of ancrent Lycia and was the first federe republic in the world. It lies on the Esen River, from where 19th century English researcher, Charles Fellows transported, with the help of the Royal Navy, the ancient ruins to London. Now the British Museum houses the originals and Xanthos must be content with the relief copies. Leaving the sea, a mountain road leads to SAKLIKENT. Here, a deep gorge with fresh water, trout and plenty of greenery, is a refreshing change from sun and sea.
East of KAS, APERLAI, SIMENA (Kale Koy), KEKOVA (Sunken City) and UCAGIZ are best enjoyed on a daily boat cruise in the summer months. Or one can reach UCAGIZ b, road. (No public transport). CYAENAI, also reached by road, is on the way to DEMRE, also known as KALE, 48 kilometres from Kas, Here is the legendary Church of St. Nicholas and the ancient city of MYRA, with its rock tombs and Roman theatre. This region, known in his¬tory as LYCIA, is the heart of ancient civilization and contains other historical sites.
Spectacular mountain scenery lies to the north of Kas. Coniferous forests, winding roads and splendid views with a few glimpses of rural life, are well off the beaten track. GOMBE, 60 kilometres from Kas, has a fresh water lake, YESILGOL (Green Lake) and a Waterfall, UCAR SU (Flying Water). The bracing air offers relief from the summer heat.
KALKAN
Located 26 km west of Kas. In Kalamak, which is the former name of this nice place you will find old white painted houses, narrow and clean street, a yacht harbour within the village as well as lovely decorated bars. The Blue cave and the Kapýtaþ beach with its golden sand which are located between Kaþ and Kalkan may be reached easily by boats departing from both towns. The most peculiarity thing about this cave which can be entered by boat is the sunlight in all shades of turqouise, phosphorus green and blue reflecting bottom of the cave.
