Located at a distance of 140 km east of Antalya, Alanya is one of the most beautiful holiday centres on the south coast of Turkey and a district containing a number of sites of quite exceptional historical significance. Its ancient name is Korakesion and was founded in the 4th century B.C., it became a famous pirate den under the Roman Empire. As it is established on the hills and surrounded by the sea led to the development of a culture dependent on the sea. In case of a defence situation Alanya was a hiding-place during the Hellenistic period and later Roman Empire period. The city was captured by Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat in 1221 and it was renamed as Alaiye. He used the city for winter accommodations and as a navy headquarter. From that time numbers of well-preserved ruins remained. This overlooking castle has 8 km length and 260 m heigth. The most attractive building of Alanya is ”Kızılkule” which means ”Red Tower” built by octagonal plan, at an altitude of 33 m in 1226. Some interesting caves such as Damlataş Cave which is known of its asthma and some other respiratory disorders healing abilities are worth to be seen.
