Wedding City Antalya - Seremonies at the Wedding

CEREMONY OF BRIDE RECEIVING FROM THE BRIDE’S HOUSE

The friends of bride staying at bride’s house as guest get up early and take the portion of the bride out of home. A woman from the groom’s house brings the bridal dress and delivers it after receiving baksheesh (tip). The bridal dress is circled around the bride three times and dressed up. Additionally a fez is worn onto the head too. A red scarf is covered to the face, a green one to the forehead thereon and a white one thereupon. A golden is attached onto the scarf. After completion of dressing action, the bride takes leave everybody in the house.

The sekban coming from the groom’s house to the bride’s house with flags and dancing the halay to receive the bride load the belongings of the bride to a car. The brother of the grooms ties a red waistcloth to the bride and the bride mounts on the horse. One of the older leads the horse all around the village in convoy and brings her to the groom’s house on the horse.

The groom waits for the bride at the door. The mother, father, Akins of the groom and guests give some gifts and only after this ceremony, the bride dismounts the horse. They sacrifice an animal for god together and jump over it to enter into the house. When the bride enters into house, the groom takes coins from the pocket and throws them behind. The children of village collect these coins as baksheesh. At this time, shots are fired and halay is danced. The wedding dinner is offered to the village people and guests. An then the wedding ceremony comes to the end. The visitors coming from the neighboring villages go back to their villages.

BRIDE’S BATH

It is an old tradition commencing from Ottoman period reaching out for today. This tradition is still going on in Anatolia. It is a glowing amusement event that took place amongst women following henna night.
One of the most special day of the bride which takes place in Turkish Bath is the Bride’s Bath. One of the days having an important place in the marriage and wedding tradition in our country is the bride’s bath day organized before the marriage for the young girl who enters into matrimony. All women of any age of both families plus close relatives and neighbors are invited to this special batch ceremony where the bride is the lead guest and is taken to the bath in silence. However, the silence of the convoy in the street is broken as soon as they enter into the bath and, so to say, all hell broke lose for amusement. With a prior agreement made, the bath is reserved for this special event on that day during which a female musical group usually composed of lute (ud), violin and tambourine is available on the navel stone in the middle together with special dancers named ‘Cengi’ wearing waist clothes. As soon as the convoy of bride’s bath enters into the bath, festivity starts, songs are sung, and the belly dance is performed. When the sister in-law and the experienced bath attendants are washing the bride diligently, a binge table is set on the navel stone, and stuffed vegetables rolled with hand, pastries (börek), burghul salads (kısır), fruits, nuts, locum, drinks are offered to the guests. The guests attend the wiggly dances of the special dancers dancing accompanied by live music.

HENNA NIGHT

In the past, wedding ceremonies have started on Monday where the marriage portion is send to the house of bridegroom. In front of wedding procession, people have carried ‘nahıl’ which is decorated in a tree form with clothes, fruits and flowers. Following bride’s Turkish bath event, a henna night has been organized in harem of bride’s house Wednesday evenings during which the men are amused in selamlik or in groom’s house.
At henna nights, the bride, young girls and sisters in-law have worn a dress named “bindalli” which are heavy clothes inlaid on velvet or satin in “dival” technique, and the face of bride are closed with red sequined bridal veil. Some of the relatives of the groom bring the henna on a silver tray in which two candles are placed to the bride’s home. After all guests are in their place, the mother in-law lets the silk clothe she took with laid out in front of herself like a runner. The bride and her friends come closer to the visitors with the lit candles in their hands during which they throw abundance money around. The bride walks on the runner laid on the floor to go to her mother in-law who she does not know much so as to kiss her hands. In the middle nuts, cookies and sugared almonds are placed, folk songs and Turkish poems specific to henna night are sung to make the bride cry, it is believed that this ritual brings abundance. Then, the bride sits on a pillar and her mother in-law puts a gold into her palm and henna is applied to their finger tips, thumbs of feet and palms by a woman who has a happy marriage. The bride keeps this gold in her palm for abundance and luck. And her friends apply henna to their hands in order that their predestination would be lucky.
